They seem to have got it right this time. Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra’s pop depiction of new-age patriotism will represent Indian cinema at the Oscars 2007 in the best foreign film category.
And India’s official entry this time seems to have popular sentiment backing it, unlike recent times in the past when the selection committee’s choice often left people puzzled.
This year it was only a few films that were submitted to the Film Federation of India. Barring the Marathi BHOOK and Telugu AMMA CHEPINDI, the submission was dominated by mainstream Bollywood films.
Besides Rakeysh Mehra’s RDB, the other contenders from Hindi films were Rakesh Roshan’s KRRISH, Karan Johar’s KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA, Naseeruddin Shah’s YUN HOTA TO KYA HOTA, Rajkumar Hirani’s LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI, Vishal Bhardwaj’s OMKARA, and Madhur Bhandarkar’s CORPORATE.
I wish ‘Rang De Basanti’ best luck and wish Amir Khan to get the Oscar at this time…

I have a slightly different take on this though.
Silkboard..
You have said what I was afraid to talk about…
I totally agree with you
actually I was surprised RDB being selected..of course i wud have hanged myself if krrish or kank were selected..,
but as far RDB, its a good, inspiring movie and all..but not good enough for oscars..
ending is really week and it has its own flaws all over the movie..i still liked it a lot but
if it doesnt make any further, there would be a reason for it.
Actually I thought RDB was plain boring..very uninspiring and repetitive..the movie created such a hype..so i tried to watch it..but gave up fast! India will lose as usual. After you watch Satyajit’s ray movie (the one that won the Oscar- Shatranj Ke Khiladi), you know what you need to win it. Besides, I have seen most of the movies that won Oscars in the Foreign Category and sadly, Bollywood was really no match. Even No Man’s Land is amazing..Im not surprised that Lagaan didnt win.
“.. Even No Man’s Land is amazing..Im not surprised that Lagaan didnt win. ..”
i agree with ruhi on that…, lagan was fun to watch movie but not oscar material..
also i agree with the fact that the class of satyajit ray, (and others like v shantaram and hrishikesh mukherjee) is totally missing….
of course its a different issue that ruhi likes all bengalis..Satyajit ray, Bose..and i dont know bipasha basu
“of course its a different issue that ruhi likes all bengalis..Satyajit ray, Bose..and i dont know bipasha basu”
Hrishikesh Mukherjee (Bong again) made amazing movies. These days, almost all Hindi movies are hogwash unfortunately.
Hahaha…Well Bongs are the ones who have made Indians proud..Arundhati Roy (half Bong, but more of a Mallu), Jhumpa Lahiri, RD Burman, Tagore, Bose, Satyajit Ray, Pranoy Roy, Sushmita Sen, Mother teresa was in Cal too, AMARTYA SEN!
Bipasha Basu??!!
“of course i wud have hanged myself if krrish or kank were selected..”
WHAT? KANK was the best movie of the year. What the heck do you mean? Take back your words, tismar!
@Tismar
“lagan was fun to watch movie but not oscar material..” then what is Oscar material…
@Ruhi
“Bipasha Basu??!!”
then probably you may also don’t know about Rani Mukherje
@sk
Tismar is right…Do you really feel KANK and Krish are Oscar material?
@shahshi,
I wish i cud define it by words, but all i meant was it was not realistic enough
but just the fact that a cricket team by buch of people who did not abt the existence of the game 3 months back and the game going down to be saved by the hero with a six in the last ball, does not seem very realistic..
and then with usual songs and all….it eats itself in the oscar race..
@sk
I must confess I was bit prejudiced abt Kank…just the fact its another of karan johars movie.., I never actually saw the movie and probably wont..so i take back my words..
in fact I put forth some new words..
GO KANK for OSCAR..!!
Rani Mukherji??!! What is the world coming to??!
Ruhiji hasn’t heard about another famous bong: Mithun Chakraborthy!! I think he should be India’s official entry to the oscars. He and Bappi Lahari (another bong?). Send them both every year. We don’t need any movies.
sk, your choices are commendable!!
If we continue sending these two guys, who knows, the Oscars committee might finally take pity on the Indian film industry.
“Tismar is right…Do you really feel KANK and Krish are Oscar material? ”
Not Krish. Hell no. KANK was an amazing movie. It was the first time an Indian had explored such a controversial topic with such ease. Karan Johar is God! I cried while watching Shahrukh in KANK. The last time I cried like that was when I watched him in Trimurti.
i cried too when I watched kuch kuch hota hai.., 25 Rs was lot of money to blow up back then..!
and ruhi, ur comment was very communal..
what do u mean its bongs who make us proud..?
do ramanujam, prithviraj chauhan, amithabh bacchan, shivaji, sachin tendulkar, embarass u? u just picked a list of succesful bongs, every community can make one list..whats ur point..is there any stats which prove ur point otherwise?
“i cried too when I watched kuch kuch hota hai.., 25 Rs was lot of money to blow up back then..!”
Look, don’t make fun of my second favorite movie. Or even my third favorite – KKKG. If God made a movie today, it wouldn’t be better than KANK. Yes!
“do ramanujam, prithviraj chauhan, amithabh bacchan, shivaji, sachin tendulkar, embarass u? u just picked a list of succesful bongs, every community can make one list..whats ur point..is there any stats which prove ur point otherwise?”
Exactly, to add to the list, Rajesh Chouhan, Mamta Kulkarni, Altaf Raja, Veerappan… do they all embarass you? Google Google (lol) for top Indians and see how many bongs you get.
Tismy,
“of course its a different issue that ruhi likes all bengalis..Satyajit ray, Bose..and i dont know bipasha basu”
My reply was in response to this comment! What gave you the impression that I like only Bongs??! Did I say that I like only bongs? Im not even a bong (maybe unfortunately; I hope I take birth again as a Bong next time so tht I can proudly say that I belong to Mithunda’s and Baaaappi Lahiri’s community). Btw, Amitabh really made me proud when he danced with 20 yr olds in KANK!!! I cried so much while watching that movie. Karan Johar took special care that we get full value of the money that we paid (supposedly, though I didnt pay anything)when we came to watch that movie. So he made it extra long to satisfy our emotional needs! IF I talk about the others, this comment will turn into a post.
I pick the choicest people from everywhere in India.
Sk,
“Rajesh Chouhan, Mamta Kulkarni, Altaf Raja, Veerappan… ” suit me fine. Altaf Raja actually evoked lots of emotions in me when I heard that song “Tum toh thehere pardesiiiii…sath kya nibhaoogeee…”.. He potrayed the emotions of a road side romeo so well! Nobody can beat him at that. And look at the quality of his voice..its awesome…totally suits a road side romeo!! How many people do you find who can potray such vivid emotions??!
Hey guys…another good news..LRMB is now sent to the Oscar (Raj Hirani said that he had got millions of emails from all over world with positive response)..So Now he has decided that he will send Munnabhai independetly in a ‘Foreign film’ category….
I am curious who are these spammers who wants LRMB at Oscar????
i think we are all most prepare to win oscar,i give u best wishes to RDB team to win oscar.
AND OSCAR GOES TO
RANG DE BASANTI
(TALIYA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11)
What are you all talking about? “Rang De Basanti” is quite Oscar worthy, and also Golden Globe worthy! I can gurentee you all that RDB will get nominated for both the Oscars and Golden Globes. Just watch and see tommorow morning (USA Eastern Time) at 8:30AM when the nominations are announced in Los Angeles! The film is beautifully picturized, and the songs by AR R. are so wonderful. Two of the songs from RBD are being considered to get nominated for Best Song for the Oscars. This is India’s time: India will bag its Oscar this year!
i really don’t know y most of them r critisizing indian movie RDB very badly. of course its a oscar award winning movie, Because its highlights the patriotizum of our country, And RDB is the most inspiring movie for each and every indian. Everyone should be proud to have these kind of movie which awankens the new generations, its a reflection of our socity its having message to our corrupted system in india, And we’ll bless this film to win the oscar award and create the immense of name to our country……
